How do I ship my Wine Purchases Home?
Posted on May 25, 2011 by admin

Most of the Visitors to the Napa & Sonoma Valley want to bring at least a few bottles of Wine Home to share with family & friends. How you get the Wine home depends on a few factors including: How much Wine will you be shipping? What Airline will you use to travel home? Is it legal to ship to your State? What time of Year will you be visiting the Valley?
If you plan on purchasing a bottle here and there throughout your day(s) of Wine tasting and plan on purchasing less than a case of Wine you should probably pickup a shipper box at the first Winery on your trip that has one (just keep asking). These boxes typically hold 12 bottles of Wine but a few hold as many as 15 bottles. Some Wine shippers have Styrofoam inserts while others have cardboard inserts, both help protect your wine from damage during shipping. Always check with the local Wine Shipping Companies close to your Hotel prior to visiting the Wineries so you can compare the costs of shipping directly from the Winery, checking the Wine on your flight home (as baggage) or dropping your Wine off at the shipper just before heading home.
A few airlines offer free or inexpensive checked baggage. Checking your Wine purchase as luggage is a great way of getting your Wine home, especially during the warmer months when your Wine could get damaged sitting on a hot truck while in transit. In many cases it’s cheaper, faster, and safer than shipping the Wine by common carrier. If you do plan on shipping the Wine home contact one of the Wine Shipping companies listed to see what the case price is to ship to your State is in advance of your Wine Tour.
Because of State and local laws as well as rules associated with Wine Distributors each Winery may or may not ship to your State. Check with each Winery to see if they can ship to your State. You should also check with the Wine Shipping Companies as well as they have their own set of rules as well.
If you visit the Wine Country during the warmer months you will find that a vast majority of the Wineries will hold their Wine shipments until they have consistently cooler weather (usually November). If you don’t want to wait this long you can either check the Wine on your flight or call the Wine Shipping companies to see what shipping options they have available.
